Issue 13. The Beginner’s Advantage: Use Your Newness as a Strength, Not Weakness

by Lidia Chmel // in Fundamentals of Coaching Biz // Reading time  minutes

The majority of my clients are new to coaching.

But they are not young. So, they have already achieved great results in their lives and/or careers.

As a result, I see them struggle to deal with the newness and incompetence in the coaching space. And that feeling halts their progress.

But what if I told you there is an advantage to being a newbie?

Don’t believe it?

Hear me out!

Here are three advantages your beginner status gives you over established coaches.

1. As a beginner, you are invested in your first clients

Everyone remembers their first 5 clients. Maybe even the first 10.

When you are just starting out, you are extremely invested in making your first clients a success.

Now, it can backfire on you. Cause if they fail, you feel like you fail.

But in general, you are doing your best, and you are making every possible effort to help those clients achieve their goals.

As you grow, obviously, you become more immune to it. It’s natural. And it is okay. You start to understand that you can only do so much and that the client might not be ready for the change.

But all it means is that you are most invested in your first clients.

They matter more to you.

Thus, you can use this as a selling point to your first clients.

2. As a beginner, you are more vulnerable and relatable if you show it

Often, coaches focus on something they’ve achieved in the past: fitness, business, relationships, etc.

The further they progress, the less relatable they become.

So, if you decide to coach on something you’ve succeeded, don’t wait too long. Otherwise, you will become unrelatable.

I want to hear from someone who managed to get just one level from me, not 10 levels.

First, those who are 10 levels from me have already forgotten what it feels like in the beginning. The memory starts to fade, and they start to connect the dots, which is only possible when looking back. And those dots might be very unique.

I want to hear about the experience, not the path. Cause the path is going to be very unique.

So, I’d much prefer someone who just reached level 2 or 3 to help me get out of level 1.

Again, use this as an advantage: promote it, talk about it, and for sure don’t be shy about it!

3. As a beginner, you have a “fresh-eyes” advantage

Unless you are making a very deliberate effort, if you stay in the space for so long, you stick to a proven process.

It’s good.

But the world is changing.

The landscape is changing, like a lot.

For example, the AI is coming into the picture. You can’t ignore it.

And there is more.

When you are a beginner and embrace the learner identity without being shy about it, you have unlimited opportunities to offer innovative approaches to known problems.

Use it.

To your advantage.

Mix & match what has already been working with the new technology to develop innovative solutions.

Try it out to see if these work on yourself and on your beta clients, and offer it to the world that is constantly seeking something new.

Actions for the week

  1. Bring the awareness: are you using your beginner's advantage? If not, how can you use it more?
  2. Don't be shy about your newness - be open, vulnerable, and honest about it in your content, on your landing pages, and in your sales conversations. See how that turns out.

And that's all for today.

Until next Sunday.

Stay awesome,

Lidia
